WOWIE!  There certainly seems to be a lot of negativity and stress whirling around these days!  A great way to clear that energy out of your space is by saging or what we call smudging!  Now a lot of people have their own version of how to do this.  I am simply sharing the way that I have done it for more than 2 decades (wow I am getting old).  It is actually very simple and you really don’t need all that fancy-schmancy stuff.  Of course, if you want to get fancy-schmancy stuff, go right ahead!

Before we dive in just some quick notes.  You can use sage in a bundle or you can just use it loose and grab a leaf or two.  Whichever way works for you is fine.  There are also other things that you can use (I will get into that in a little bit)!

Important:  make sure you place a plate, bowl, or something UNDER the sage as sometimes ash will fall from it and you do not want to burn your carpet (YES I have done that many times).

Okay…ready?  Here we go!

  1. First, I always like to set an intention before I sage.  So go ahead you don’t need to be formal!  Just trust your gut!  Hint:  you can say something like…”I ask that all negativity be removed from this space and for it to be filled with love and light.”
  2. Take your sage bundle or your sage leaf and light it on fire.
  3. Now blow it out so it is no longer on fire but instead just smoking.  Remember to have your plate, bowl, or shell under the sage to catch any falling ash.
  4. Walk around each room from left to right allowing the smoke to just move throughout the room.
  5. Repeat in all the rooms in your home.

Tips:

  1. I like to smudge all my rooms from left to right because as a healer I believe the left has to do with the past and the right is the future.  I always like to clear the past before the future.  This is just something “I” do.  You do what feels right to you!
  2. Be sure to open all closet doors!
  3. Don’t forget garages, basements, etc
  4. Whenever I move into a new space I sage/smudge the entire property along the property line and then I sage/smudge around the entire home (yes left to right).
  5. When I do the inside of the house I do not open the windows. I like to allow the sage to dissipate on its own.  I know a lot of people like to open the windows as they feel it draws out the negative energy. You do what feels right to you.

Other things you can use for smudging:

Palo Santo – this is a wood that is native to Peru, Ecuador, and other South American countries.  I personally love the earthy smell!  I also like to use it as the smell does not linger as long as the sage.  I use it just like I do the sage. I light it on fire, then blow it out and use the smoke to smudge.

Incense- sometimes I prefer to use an increase to smudge.  I will just light the incense stick and follow the above directions. My favorite is NagChampa and Palo Santo!

Resin – Resin comes from trees and plants and there are many to choose from.  Each has its own scent and purpose. I love to use Frankincense! You can place the resin of your choice on small charcoal disks.  You light the disks and the heat from the charcoal melts the resins.

Sprays- Sometimes you just can’t set something on fire (LOL).  In that case, you can use a smudging spray (a spray made with essential oils) to clear the energy in the room.

If you are in the area, stop by!  We would love to show you how we smudge!
