Is the Universe Ignoring Me?
Have you ever felt like the Universe has completely ghosted you? You’ve prayed. You’ve asked for guidance. You’ve meditated. You’ve pulled a card...or twelve. You’ve asked for a sign. You’ve tried to surrender. You surrendered for approximately 17 minutes, took it all back, worried about it some more, and then tried surrendering again. And still...nothing. No booming voice from the heavens. No perfectly timed sign. No sudden flash of clarity. Just silence.
Hello? Universe? Are you there?
I think most of us have experienced those times when we desperately want an answer and can't seem to get one. Maybe you're worried about money. Maybe you're struggling with your health. Maybe someone you love is going through something and you can't fix it. Maybe you're questioning a relationship, your career, your purpose, or what you're supposed to do next. Or maybe you're simply exhausted from holding everything together and would really appreciate the Universe stepping in and saying, “Here. This is what you need to do.” Wouldn't that be nice?
But here's something I've learned: Silence doesn't necessarily mean you're being ignored.
Sometimes we are looking so hard for the answer that we can't hear it. Fear is loud. Worry is loud. And overthinking? Overthinking is REALLY loud. Intuition usually isn't. Intuition tends to whisper, and when your mind is running through 47 different scenarios at 2:00 in the morning, that quiet little voice inside of you doesn't stand much of a chance.
There are also times when the answer simply isn't there yet, and I think that's one of the hardest spiritual lessons of all. We want to believe that if we ask the right question, meditate long enough, stay positive enough, or trust enough, we'll immediately receive an answer. The truth is, life doesn't always work that way.
Sometimes you aren't supposed to know yet. Sometimes circumstances are still unfolding. Sometimes another person has a choice to make that will affect what happens next. Sometimes the opportunity that will change everything hasn't appeared yet. And sometimes the next step is so small that we're overlooking it because we're waiting for the Universe to hand us the entire roadmap.
There are those moments when we ask, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” when perhaps the only question we need answered today is, “What do I need to do next?” Not next year. Not six months from now. Not how everything is going to work out. Just next.
Maybe it's making the phone call you've been avoiding. Maybe it's asking for help, having the conversation, filling out the application, taking a walk, saying no, saying yes, or getting some much-needed rest. And maybe the answer is to do absolutely nothing today. After all, sometimes doing nothing is a decision too.
We put so much pressure on ourselves to figure everything out, especially when life feels uncertain. We want to see the entire path before we're willing to take another step. I have shared this analogy so many times, but it is just so ideal in these situations. Think about driving down a dark road at night. Your headlights don't illuminate the entire road from where you are all the way to your destination. They only show you what's directly in front of you. Yet somehow, mile after mile, turn after turn, you get where you're going.
Maybe guidance works that way too. Maybe you get enough light for this part of the journey. Then a little more. Then a little more. Until one day you look behind you and realize there was a path forming all along, even when you couldn't see where it was taking you.
If you are going through a difficult time right now, I especially want you to remember something. You do not have to turn your struggle into a spiritual lesson today. You don't have to figure out why it's happening. You don't have to find the blessing in it. You don't have to pretend you're okay when you're not. And you certainly don't have to worry that the Universe has forgotten about you simply because you can't see what comes next. I have been there (more times than I care to admit). I get it. I really do!
Faith isn't believing that everything is going to happen exactly the way you want it to. Faith is simply saying, “I don't know what's next, but I trust myself to handle the next step when it appears.”
So, if you've been asking, “Universe, are you even listening?” maybe stop asking for the whole answer. Get quiet for a moment and ask one smaller question: “What do I need right now?” Then listen. The answer may not arrive with flashing lights, repeating numbers, a cardinal sitting outside your window, or a certified letter from the Universe with very clear instructions. It might simply be a quiet thought that keeps coming back to you. A feeling you can't quite explain. An idea. A conversation that happens at exactly the right time. A sudden moment of clarity. Or perhaps the realization that today, you don't need an answer at all. You just need to keep going.
Most importantly remember, the Universe isn't ignoring you. Maybe the whole road isn't meant to be visible yet. Maybe you only need enough light to see the next few feet. And maybe for today...that's enough.
